As I watch my baby of 6 months look at the world around her I am beginning to truly understand what Jesus said in Matthew 18:3 “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” One day I was giving her a bath and she had wrapped her little fingers around my pinky to hold herself up. She had no expectancy that anything was going to go wrong and she had full confidence that me, her mother, protector, would make sure nothing happened to her. Her grasp on my pinky became to feel less than secure and from what I could tell with the look in her little wondering eyes she observed my hand to see which finger would be better for her to hold onto so that she could solidly stand. Without hesitation she tried to grab ahold of my hand knowing it was the best choice. Although her llittle paw could barely wrap around mine I grasped it, praising her for her effort! She had no preconceptions of knowing she could not stand without my help…without my strength. She knew just holding onto just my pinky was not going to the job she wanted to accomplish and that was standing solidly for a period of time.
How many of us can’t come to grips with our own weaknesses enough to rely on the One that can give us strength in our time of need or temptation? How many of us have just held on to God’s pinky thinking that would be enough to sustain us? One of many things I am continuing to learn is His grace is sufficient for me, for His power is made perfect in my weakness. Did you get that? His power is made perfect in our weakness! I know there are those that just can’t say “I can’t do this!” and call on the One that can because they have to have the glory or that was just the way they were brought up…but those are the ones that same scripture was written “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Those of you who are only holding on to God’s pinky because you are afraid to give up the things of this world because you think those are what will make you happy and are “guiding” you through this life, you are believing a lie…the same lie I believed. That lie led me through a painful season in my life that finally brought me to completely placing my life in Christ..a place of complete surrender, and trust in the One I know has my back and has the best intentions in all things! I no longer hold onto just His pinky to guide me through this life, but His hand and I know when I am facing a situation that there is no way I am going to be able to withstand on my own accord, I turn it over to Him with confidence that He will work on my behalf as the Bible promises over and over!
If you are one of those holding onto God’s pinky for the sake of still holding onto the things of this life for guidance or pleasure, or you are one that can never bow down to a higher power of your own to do the work for you in a situation, let me encourage you just this one time to just let go and let God and if by any means My God doesn’t do what He promises in His Word, then what harm is it that you just go back to the life you have been living? Better to lose your pride this one time than to lose out on a lifetime of true happiness and an everlasting peace 🙂
