As we have seen with the presidential debate how wonderful our tongue can get ourselves in a heap of trouble. As with the topic of yesterday, our tongue can also give life to those around us that are suffering and believe me, there are many who are! I have had much heartache because of the lack of self control due to my speech. There are 137 scriptures that discuss the matter about the tongue so you know if there are that many, God obviously finds it of importance for the believer to take care of how they use it.
In life, we are going to run into many people that definately have a difficult time controlling what comes out of their mouth, but I believe it is of upmost importance we as believers tightly reign in anything coming out of our mouths that would ever hinder anyone from thinking anything less of what we are proclaiming to be…and that is a follower of Jesus Christ. Now, that is not to say we should start with the whole, “I thou knowest that this day, saith the Lord, I shall have a glorious day,” talk. I am just saying, if you are a believer and a follower of Jesus Christ our speech should mirror that of what we are claiming to be and who we say we believe in!
Even as Jesus stood there being accused He was silent….completely silent and expressionless allowing the accusations to be spewed from their mouths. You couldn’t say that about our presidential debates! Just think for a moment….how Jesus responded in speech in most instances where in the world’s eyes He should have opened His mouth, rudely putting people in their place, He calmly, lovingly, & respectfully answered all those that questioned Him or spoke to Him.
I bring the topic of the tongue up not to just reiterate the post yesterday, but to also bring to your attentionso you can see the life the tongue holds within it as well. I believe those that use it to tear people down and those that use it to lift people up will reap what they sow. The scripture that best sums it up is Proverbs 18:21 “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” You cannot be a true born again, bought by the blood, follower of Jesus Christ and enjoy tearing those around you down using your tongue like a snake, striking people down with your words. We as believers were given a tongue to lift each other up, encouraging, and giving life to all who come in contact with us.
My pastor once said that we owe everyone we come in contact with a debt…a debt of love. We can’t ask for an IOU on the days we just don’t feel like using our speech to glorify the Lord and show those around us love and encouragement as we are commanded to do! I exhort you to put the things of this world aside and love on the people God places in your life on a daily basis. You will truly never know the reason they are there, but I do know one day we will be held accountable for every word spoken as stated in Matthew 12:36 “But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.” That is one day I prefer not to be a fly on the wall, even in heaven, due to my own words!
I encourage you to realize the power you have within your speech and use it for His glory, his purposes, and His will in your life. I pray you use it carefully and give those around you words of life and not evil. There are so many that just need hope…I pray they find it in the words you speak!
