With the final end of yet another election I found myself deep in thought about the direction of this country. Don’t worry I am not about to get all political on you, but am just taking a walk down memory lane. Fifty years ago we were a country that sat down at the dinner table every night as a family, that only needed one source of income, that didn’t have the need to lock our doors at night, was able to let our kids head up to the local grocery store without the fear of something happening to them, that planned things around church life, and had a reverence for the unborn. Many things have changed in the last 50 years…some good things and some not so good things! I definitely feel as of late that if a person goes against the majority’s beliefs then you are lumped in with those that are extreme and are accused of being hateful or intolerant without anyone ever knowing a single thing about you and what you really believe.
Being a follower of Christ doesn’t automatically make me an extremist that judges the world to hell for their sins no more than being in a garage makes me a Lamborghini! I understand where the stereotype comes from though. I get so tired of followers of Christ not operating in love, patience, and a humble spirit within their own lives so when the world looks upon me they already have a preconception of my beliefs or behavior. The church has gotten so far away from the message of Christ I am afraid they only see judging and hateful people!
In case we have forgotten, the message of Christ is LOVE wrapped up in Jesus..that is it. John 13:35 “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” Love for one another does not just apply to other Christians but for everyone which also includes the ugly, white, black, red, straight, homosexual, republican, democrat, and lets not forget the independents. Also in 1 John 4:16 “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.” I know some loving people who are not followers of Christ and I know followers of Christ who are not loving people!
I think it is essential to be able to show love in this world to all and stand your ground in your beliefs in such a way that you help others see your view but also that you come away with a better understanding of their view as well. I know it does not always happen that way because our flesh gets the best of us sometimes and I have seen that through this election and mostly anytime you begin to talk about politics or religion. Because of outspoken tv evangelists or in your face Christians thinking they are God’s gifts to this fallen world, those who try to walk in love and speak as Jesus spoke get classified as a “self-righteous, judgmental, right-wing radical” Christian and I have pretty much had enough of all the nonsense I can take.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe being homosexual and living with your partner is no different in God’s eyes than straight people living together without being married. Yes, I know what Leviticus says but sin is sin, as stated in James 2:10 “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.” For we know all have fallen short of the glory of God! I was taught there is no degree in sin…we just as a people of course think murdering is much worse than telling a lie because we see things carnal. God sees things so unbelievably different from we do. I have to see it from a parents view. If one of my children come to me and confesses they killed someone and the other comes to me and confesses they were not faithful in their marriage, I would still love them both regardless of their actions and that is how I believe God sees us and our sin because His Son already paid the price for all of them..past, present, and future! Our sins have been forgiven and if there is a distinction in degree of sin it makes no difference to the salvation of our souls. If we are living outside the grace and forgiveness of our sins, we are condemned already as John 3:19-21 states “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.” And I, my friends, can definitely be a witness to that 🙂
I just want to encourage you to love, love, and then love some more and then let the Holy Spirit do what He was put here to do! It is time to be radical alright, but in love! There is no greater testament of who God is than to love the unlovable, care for the uncared for, give to the ungivable, and to touch the lives of the untouchables! Stand your ground in who you are in Christ, being the light on a hilltop for you may be the only light someone sees!
