I know I am gonna get a bunch of flack for this, but this is such a huge problem in the lives of believers and non-believers that I cannot for the life of me just walk away from it thinking it will just solve itself. The enemy has tactfully used this tool over and over so well that he has stealthily ingrained it into our society into thinking it is acceptable behavior. Believers and non-believers alike think this tactfully used tool is no big deal when it fact it is huge….as they think it is no big deal it intertwines itself seductively in the fabric of marriages and in the quilt of a family, destroying relationships one by one. Before you know it, the slip knot has been wrapped around your neck unknowingly allowing the enemy to gain ground within your life and you wake up to the fact your marriage is falling apart, your children are crying out for love, and you are far from the person you set out to be all because of the casual routine of that one drink…or two..or three, etc. Yep, I am referring to drinking my friends. I see it all the time when I am out to dinner or strolling through Facebook posts, people everywhere think alcohol is no big deal…it is part of our society that is quite harmless. Even Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 10:23 “Everything is permissible…” That is exactly the lie I told myself over and over as I sat night after night after the kids went to bed, folding laundry, waiting for my husband to get home, polishing off a bottle of wine…”It is permissible Cis…it isn’t like you are getting fall down drunk, you are just relaxing until Jerry gets home…it is no big deal.” It became a huge deal as I couldn’t wait to get the kids to bed so I could pop open that bottle…so I could “relax.” That lie is such a joke I actually laugh now when my memories of those nights creep in. Yeah, I relaxed alright to where I would get so tired, I spent no time with the husband I was supposedly waiting for to get home, always woke up thirsty and with a slight headache and just wanted to “relax” the next day, leaving the housework for a later date and not spending the quality time with the kids. It wasn’t until the promptings of the Holy Spirit within me that convicted me of my nightly routine shouldn’t be routine at all if I truly wanted a deeper relationship not just with my husband, my kids, but also my Creator.
Please understand, I am not here to point fingers or to judge, for I am far qualified from telling someone their lifestyle is wrong. Drinking has been such a burden to myself and others in my life that I would not be able to look myself in the mirror if I did share the tactics the enemy uses to grip people everywhere into thinking drinking is harmless to their wellbeing. .I am here pleading for the sake of your husband, your children, sisters, brothers, parents, and the sake of your relationship with Jesus Christ to rid yourself of the detrimental grip alcohol can have on your life. Nothing good has ever come from me drinking and I can pretty much say with certainty the same can be said for whoever is reading this. The Bible is very clear on drinking unless you like to twist scripture around to make your drinking acceptable in your eyes like I did.
If you don’t think drinking is an issue in your life then it shouldn’t be too difficult to stop completely. If the thought of you never taking another drink brings a sudden itch of panic, disbelief, or even anger, I would beg to argue the spirit of addiction has a total grip upon your life….and that could be said about anything you allow to take priority in your life above God. “That’s a little radical, don’t ya think, Cis?” Well, as the famous saying goes He took my sins pretty radically when He died on the cross for me, don’t ya think?
I want to encourage you if you feel you can’t see yourself not ever drinking again that you realize alcohol has a grip on you. I pray you are able to talk to someone you trust and are able to give it to God. You cannot stop drinking on your own. Trust me, it has to come from God and God alone. I could not do it without the power that comes from Jesus Christ! You may blow this whole blog off and laugh at the thought that this blog would even insinuate you have a problem and that is okay because I know there will come a time where you will have to face the issue alcohol may have in your life and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the God that helped me will be the same God there helping you…you just have to come to Him, ask for His forgiveness and ask for His help. I promise, once you rid your life of the enemies tool to take you away from everything God has for you, the floodgates of heaven will not be able to be kept closed on your life 🙂
Just in case you don’t want to take my word…
Proverbs 23:29-35 “Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has
complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? Those who linger
over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine. Do not gaze at wine when it is
red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! In the end it
bites like a snake and poisons like a viper. Your eyes will see strange sights
and your mind imagine confusing things. You will be like one sleeping on the
high seas, lying on top of the rigging. “They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m
not hurt! They beat me, but I don’t feel it! When will I wake up so I can find
Isaiah 5:11-12 “Woe to those who rise early in the morning to run after their
drinks, who stay up late at night till they are inflamed with wine. They have
harps and lyres at their banquets, tambourines and flutes and wine, but they
have no regard for the deeds of the Lord, no respect for the work of his hands.”
Proverbs 20:1,17 “Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise… He who loves pleasure will become poor; whoever loves wine and oil will never be rich.”
Isaiah 5:22 “Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at
Gal 5:19-21 “The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality,
impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy,
fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness,
orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this
will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
